As high school and college graduations draw near it is a good time for all of us to reflect on what we will be doing in the future. What should we invest our lives in? For some this means college and career choices that will lead to jobs and careers and lifetime achievements.
But here is a thought; there are simple day to day choices that will impact our eternal futures. So what are we investing our lives in today that will have eternal impacts?
Over 30 years ago a good friend once told me that, “Three things last forever: God, God’s word, and people. You should be investing your time in things that last eternally.” That impacted me so much that I remember his words even today. It is something we can all strive after regardless of our capabilities, life situations or selected occupations.
Easily over seventy verses in the Bible discuss God’s eternal nature. The time we spend loving God, adoring him, appreciating Him, and summiting ourselves to Him are eternal investments.
Psalm 119:89 states, “Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” (ESV) Christ’s words were so important that we see all three members of the Trinity involved with bringing His words to the Apostles’ remembrance. God’s word is eternal and we make eternal investments when we study it and put it into our hearts.
Finally, people are eternal; so our role as ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor 5:20) has eternal significance as we share God’s Gospel with people. It is an occupational calling given to all followers of Christ.
Graduations are significant events in one’s life, but so is daily deciding to invest our lives in things eternal. Let us live with an eternal focus in all that we do.
